Our founder, Sante Nicolia, was the only son of a farmer and born in Frosinone, Italy. He grew up alongside his three sisters. When Sante was in his teen years, he worked as an auto electrician where he learned how to drive trucks.
In 1954 Sante fell in love and married his wife, Lina. Shortly afterward they traveled by ship to America the land of opportunity with the hopes of starting his family. Sante worked as a laborer for a concrete foundation contractor in NY. The contractor soon saw that Sante had great ambitions, as well as a great personality, and made him a partner. He drove the concrete form truck and the concrete mixer truck and worked seven days a week.
Sante and Lina’s first child Antonio was born in March 1955. Only a few months afterward, Lina left to go back to Italy while pregnant with their second child, Ida. For the next few years, Sante worked hard to save enough money to go into business on his own. In 1959, Sante, at 26 years of age, very limited in his ability to speak English, and with no brothers or family to help him, purchased a small piece of property with a mechanics shop and one concrete mixer truck. He began serving a few contractors by picking up concrete at the plants of other local manufacturers. As time passed, Sante needed to buy more trucks in order to meet the needs of his growing customer base. After obtaining a loan and buying several more trucks, he hired a handful of drivers to man his trucks and help him deliver concrete to his customers.
Sante never forgot where he came from and as a result he treated his employees with a mutual respect. He realized early-on in his career, that in order to motivate his men to work in a fashion that benefits his company, he needed to be respectful to them no matter what their job was. As his fleet grew and his staff grew, he began to cement a solid reputation for himself and his company. Sante was known for having excellent delivery drivers and with reliable service. After some time, Sante formed a partnership with a ready-mix producer and they began to share a plant in Westbury, NY. A large part of Sante’s success early on had to do with the way Sante carried himself with not only his customers but also his employees, he was always modest and very charismatic. Eventually Sante was able to buy a few more plant locations on his own to form what is now Nicolia Ready Mix.
Today his five sons, two daughters, and wife look back at the sacrifices that he made to come to the land of opportunity and establish a company from the ground up. Sante took his sons to work with him when they were very young. As his son’s grew up in the business, they had to start from the bottom like he did. The hard work and dedication of his son’s helped him to bring his company to new heights and sustain the company’s growth. Eventually all five of his sons moved into to administrative and managerial positions in the company, and in 1990 Sante sadly passed away at 56 years old. His five sons formed a partnership and expanded the company beyond their own wildest dreams. From a small time ready mix delivery company, to a regional leader in the manufacturing and distribution of concrete and related products, the company has come a long way. Sante would be proud to see his business continue to flourish as his grandchildren step up to the plate into the managerial roles, and bring their family business into its Third Generation.
